Description
A Salut to Michael - The Farmer und Woodcutter
Michael was my neighbour, a friendly, helpful old man, always cheerful. Proud of his work as a farmer and woodcutter. To fell trees was his passion. He talked to the trees when he had to make them, scolded them when they resisted.
He had good saws and hatchets which he used not as usual, he just did not hit with the ax - he danced so. Fascinating to watch.
I had to paint him - but have not dared to ask him if he would be my model. I watched him many times, made a few quick sketches while he was mowing his lawn. - Painted in my Studio and changed his face a little, because I had not even asked him if I could paint him.
A few days after i finished my work, another neighbour came to see my pictures. The first thing he said was: "Oh, there is Michael!"
What is in our minds we can not change!!

I love this! In part because of the subject which reminds me of a late August morning in Gimmelwald, Switzerland when the entire village climbed the steep mountainside to harvest/scythe the grain. But mostly because of how BEAUTIFULLY you finesse the paint onto the canvas!! :) FAV
